Me and my girlfriend

La and I have been able to spend a whole bunch of quality time together since her return from Arizona. It's been wonderful.

The only downside is that the reason we've been spending so much mommy-daughter time is because Dr P has been skiing in Vail at a bachelor party. We miss the boy, darnit!

Here's what we two girls have been up to in his absence:

On Friday I took an early break from work to "have lunch" with La at her school. I didn't actually eat, because who in the heck eats lunch at 10:30 am? Besides La and her classmates, of course. And grandma Fern. I mean, I barely had time for my coffee to kick in, and there I was, inhaling the scent of Hamburger Steak with Gravy.

PEEEE to the UUUU, man.

keypad

Isn't it cute how they have little codes they punch in? Nifty. La had to enter hers three times because I was hovering and making her nervous. Sorry La. It's what moms do. We micromanage.

On Fridays they're allowed to have ice cream. Every single kid in that lunchroom started his/her meal with the ice cream course. It was quite the spectacle.

lunchtable

It was so special, sitting there, conversing with La and her classmates. They were all very sweet. But when lunch was over very strange thing happened. La cried when I told her I had to leave. She has never even cried when I've put her on the plane to see her dad. But when I left that lunchroom? All-out waterworks.

That evening we moseyed on down the block to SAW's Barbeque. The pork they serve there is the stuff of heaven, I'm convinced.

La likes their baked potatoes and sweet tea.

And I like anything there that I can stuff in my face. It's all so dang DELICIOUS.

After dinner we took a stroll to the playground at La's school, where La got to hang out with this furry little creature.

At first I was like, "Don't touch that thing! DO YOU WANT RABIES?!" But it turned out one of the kids playing at the park had brought her pet rabbit with her to get some exercise. So it was all good.

On Saturday, we "slept in" until 7:30 and hung out in our PJs until somewhere round lunchtime when we finally picked our butts up off the couch and went to get us some beignets.

La has never had a beignet before, and she's been dying to try one ever since Disney's The Princess and The Frog came out.

I had to google where to get beignets in Birmingham, and that led us to a little hole-in-the-wall downtown. The place was pretty much a dive, but their food was decent.

The sugar kicked in immediately, as it usually does.

After our sugar high, we hopped back in the car and headed to the movie theater, where we saw Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. We both loved the movie. La has read a few of the books, and it was fun to see her get excited about certain parts of the movie that she knew were coming up.

Saturday night the two of us spent much of the evening holed up in the basement bathroom—a result of tornado warnings in our area. The warning went something like, "An extremely large, very destructive tornado has been tracked 20 miles northwest of Birmingham, heading in a southeast direction. Birmingham area residents should seek shelter in an interior room in the lowest level of a sturdy building. A tornado can develop at any time!"

That was enough to get our little hineys straight into the basement, where we hung out on the bathroom floor with blankets and pillows and a flashlight and extra batteries just in case.

The bad part of the storm missed us by a few miles, and we were fine ... just a little shaken.

Aside from Saturday night's adventure, our long weekend together was relaxing and fun. But we are both very happy to have Dr P home again.
